These glass beads were made by the ancient Phoenicians who actively traded in the Mediterranean (present-day Lebanon). With humorous faces, some resemble guardian spirits (daemons) for warding off evil and others look like birds or other animals, but it is not always clear what they represent. They have holes for threading string through, and it seems that they were worn by their owners as talismans to protect them from misfortune.
