Lourdes, famous Christian sanctuary and a town at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains in southwestern France. In the mid-19th century, a miracle appeared there. It is said that Virgin Mary appeared in front of the girl Bernadette, and the fountain of curing incurable diseases gushed out. So far, the springs of the caves are still gushing, and five million Christians, tourists, and patients praying for good health go to there each year. In Lourdes, Mass is held every night, and pilgrims hold candles and sing Hallelujah hymns. In 2007, Hirayama Ikuo came to Lourdes and saw a procession of prayers. From their heartless prayers, he felt the universality that transcended nation, nationality, and religion, and the candle that illuminated the darkness seemed to be the light of hope that lightened the hearts of the people. The pilgrims went ahead in the twilight, which coincided with the painter's life-long path of praying and touched upon the hearts of the people.
