From the Hellenistic period up until the beginning of the Roman imperial period, glass mosaics were very popular in Egypt and Alexandria. They were produced with traditional motifs which have been favored since ancient times such as birds, fish, and other animals, as well as Mediterranean designs such as flowers and the gods of Greek mythology.
