The mosaic glass technique wherein colored glass rods are combined and welded together was developed between the 1st century BCE and the 1st century CE in Alexandria, Egypt. Various motifs such as exquisite botanical designs, Greek gods, and animals were made using astonishingly advanced techniques. This glass fragment shows a mosaic of a botanical design which was created by combining and welding navy blue transparent glass with yellow, red, white and other colored glass. With its carefully polished surface, this was used as inlay ornamentation on household furnishings in palaces and royal residences.
